Expressive English

As language evolves, so do the words we use to express ourselves. Gen Z, (people born between 1997 and 2012), has added over 690 words to the English dictionary. Words like rizz, bussin, slay, and sus are all now part of everyday language and are changing the way people communicate. These changes can even be seen in sign-offs, the phrases we use to end a letter or email.

Snarky Sign-offs

Traditionally, sign-offs like sincerely, regards, and best wishes have been used to convey a professional demeanor. However, Gen Z has chosen to be more creative and expressive in their sign-offs. Some of these sign-offs are cold regards, yours unfaithful, slay on, ok then, that's all. Unfortunately, using these sign-offs in a workplace setting can have some negative consequences. They make you look less serious and childish, which is not the impression you want to give to potential employers.

Simple and Special

While it's okay to have a different sign-off that reflects your personality, it's important to consider the audience and context. In a professional setting, it's best to stick with a traditional sign-off that conveys respect and professionalism. However, there's no harm in adding a personal touch to your sign-off, like my geography teacher who ends his emails with "best." It's simple, not offensive, and sets him apart from others without being inappropriate.

Our Future

As we continue to navigate the changing landscape of language, it's important to consider how our words are being perceived by others. By choosing our words carefully and thoughtfully, we can effectively communicate our message while still maintaining a professional and respectful demeanor. Because in the end, our future starts with you.
